August 15 is the National Liberation Day of Korea (known as gwang-bok-jeol)—the only holiday celebrated on the entire Korean peninsula. It coincides with Victory over Japan Day, when U.S. forces ended the decades-long imperial Japanese occupation of the Korean peninsula.
On Thursday, August 15, 2019, New York City Council Speaker Corey Johnson, Council Member Paul Vallone, and Council Members Barry Grodenchik and Keith Powers will be hosting a celebration of Korean Independence Day at City Hall. They will be honoring KAAGNY, Kwang Bok Association of New York, and the National Unification Advisory Council (NY Chapter, also known as Pyungtong) at this event for their contributions to the Korean American community and their dedication to commemorating the Korean Independence movement in New York City.
This event is FREE and open to all!
