Your 10 Minutes Can Change Our Community’s Next 10 Years!

The KA Vote Task Force has launched “Korean American Day of Service,” a nationwide campaign to get out the count before the Census deadline (now moved to October 5, 2020). It is urging every Korean to volunteer 10 minutes to contact 10 people to fill out the Census, to impact the next 10 years of our community’’s future.

The Task Force is pushing out a graphic on KakaoTalk and social media asking each person to share the message to 10 people and ask whether they have completed the Census. It will be particularly important to help seniors who can’t access online by themselves or Koreans who can’t speak English fluently.

The Census only takes 10 minutes to complete online, and can be accessed in Korean at www.2020census.gov/ko. The Census Bureau will never ask for your full Social Security number, bank account or credit card numbers, money or donations, or anything on behalf of a political party. The 2020 Census will not ask citizenship status.

The 2020 Census will determine congressional representation, inform hundreds of billions in federal funding every year, and provide data that will impact communities for the next decade. So it is crucial that every Korean living in America gets counted.

Funded by the Naeil Foundation, the KA Vote Task Force is a non-partisan nationwide Task Force recently formed by first and to first and second generations of Korean Americans across the United States to increase Korean American participation in the 2020 Census and the Elections, which are the pillars of civic engagement and democracy. The purpose of the Task Force is to ensure Korean American representation by being properly counted and heard. It is led by the Korean American Coalition (KAC) and Korean American Association of Greater New York (KAAGNY), and supported by a growing number of Korean American Associations and organizations. KA 투표 태스크포스는 전 인구조사 마감일이었던 9월 30일(10월 5일로 연장)을 전국의 한인 인구 집계를 마치기 위해 “한인 센서스 봉사의 날”로 정하였다. 한인 한 명이 10분을 투자하여 향후 10년간 우리 지역사회에 영향을 미치게 될 인구조사에 10명의 주변인이 참여할 수 있게 하기 위함이다.

우리 태스크포스는 카카오톡과 SNS을 통해 그래프를 공유함으로써 한 사람이 열 명의 지인에게 연락을 취해 인구조사를 작성했는지에 대해 묻는다. 이는 온라인 접속이 어려운 노인이나 영어가 유창하지 않은 한인들의 인구조사 참여를 돕는데 특히 중요하다.

인구조사를 온라인으로 완료하는 데는 10분 밖에 걸리지 않으며 www.2020census.gov/ko 에서 한국어 서비스를 제공받을 수 있다. 2020년 센서스 인구조사는 귀하의 사회보장번호(SSN)나 은행, 신용카드, 계좌번호 또는 이민자 신분에 관한 그 어떠한 정보도 요구하지 않으며 돈이나 기부금을 요구하지도 않는다. 또한 정당을 대신하여 어떠한 정보도 수집하지 않는다.

2020년 센서스 인구조사의 결과에 따라 향후 10년간 각 주와 지역사회에 6,750억 달러의 연방 기금이 어떻게 배분될 것인지 결정된다. 그러니 센서스 인구조사 참여는 향후 10년간 한인들과 우리 지역사회가 받을 자원과 혜택을 직접적으로 좌우한다. 따라서 미국에 거주하는 모든 한인이 집계되는 것은 매우 중요하다.

KA 태스크포스는 내일(Naeil) 재단이 자금을 지원하고, 시민 참여와 민주주의의 핵심인 2020년 인구조사 및 선거에 한인들의 참여를 높이기 위해 미국 전역에서 1세대와 2세대 한인 연합 단체로 최근 구성된 초당파 태스크포스이다. 이 태스크포스의 목적은 한인의 인구수가 올바르게 계산되고 그들의 목소리가 들릴 수 있게 하기 위함이다. 한미연합회 (KAC)와 뉴욕한인회(KAAGNY)가 이끌며, 전국의 많은 한인 단체들이 참여하고 있다. 인구조사 및 투표 참여를 원하거나 이에 관한 정보는 www.KAvote.org 에서 얻을 수 있다.
