The Korean Performing Arts Center proudly presents its 18th annual concert, "Spirit, Nature and Heaven” featuring New York's two exceptional Korean performing artists, Sue Yeon Park (Korean dance master and national heritage fellow at the National Endowment for the Arts) and "Jang Jae Hyo & the Sonagi Project" (Korean traditional percussion ensemble). This special concert will focus the culturally central role of storytelling by religious specialists, Korean shamans. The spirit of this unique tradition has survived and lives today through the re-creation of the tradition in contemporary settings. The concert will begin with seungcheonmu, dance of the spirit ascending to heaven, and other related dance traditions. Sonagi Project will introduce some of most exhilarating new compositions based on traditional Korean rhythms and chants, drawing from Korea’s shamanic culture and the vocal art of pansori. Sonagi’s performances capture the emotion and energy of Korean traditional music, linking Korea’s past to the contemporary world stage.
