Hyun Contemporary's
Artist Promotion of the Month Inyoung Seoung: Stream of
Unconsciousness Opening Reception:
Thursday, July 10th from
6-8PM Elga Wimmer-Hyun
Contemporary 526 West 26 Street #310, New York Cityhyuncontemporary@gmail.com , 212. 206. 0006 or 201. 724.
7077 Tue-Fri: 12-6, Sat: 12-3 or by appointment Can one be
conscious during a moment of unconsciousness? At times, artists fall deeply
into their work, into a state of mind where they lose conscious awareness and
detach from the tangible sensitivity of their physical bodies. While in this
conscious yet unconscious state, the artists’ works will contain an essence that
has never been revealed. The numerous lines that make up Inyoung Seoung’s
works define an artist’s journey into her subconscious mind. While trees may all
look the same, each tree is different from the next, and no two are alike. This
is the same with people. Most individuals in a community are not aware of their
unique desires as a group, but within the subconscious, these unique desires are
internalized and catalogued into a web of relationships we are not consciously
aware of. In order to delve into this hidden mind, Seoung maintained a
meditative state of unconsciousness while drawing repetitive lines. Each line or
“branch” is uniquely different in its detail, weight, and movement; at the same
time, these organic “branches” form a connective community. Therefore, these
“branches” essentially represent the desires of the subconscious mind and its
relativity to the singular and the whole: in people and nature alike. Inyoung
Seoung graduated from Hong-Ik University with a Bachelor of Arts in sculpture.
After immigrating to the U.S., she has received recognition for her
installations and drawings, and has participated in solo and group exhibitions
in New York, New Jersey and California and she will have solo show at Monmouth
Museum in New Jersey in this fall. She just had a solo exhibition last month in
Chelsea, New
York.
