Internet development - which
is now one of our newly emerged cultures - allows quick exchange of information
and provides a convenient access to glean useful data. Although the world has
become a “terminal”, manifold critical consequences follow it.
Kim’s new series exhibition,
‘Addiction’, depicts the seriousness of our involuntary addictions that
accompanies the growth of technology of modern civilization. Along with such
wontedness, technology has become the significant part of people’s daily life.
Based on Kim’s indication, people tend to think that they actually ‘own’ them,
however, it is the electronic devices that possess the people. Kim
straightforwardly depicts the dangerousness of people’s unconsciousness through
his artworks.
By interfusing and arranging
the antithetical mediums – brightly colored poppy flowers, electronic devices,
electric wires, etc. – Kim creates another newly formed 21th century addiction
called ‘Poppy Internet’. His idea of dichotomous relationships portrays the
people involuntarily floundering, in developed technology without realizing
it.
Artist Kim, who received BFA
from Seoul National University, came to US and steadily worked as an artist
since 1990s. His various yet distinct works of art were revealed through his
Solo and group exhibitions, and this is Kim’s first Solo exhibition in Chelsea,
New York.

현대에 새로이 생겨난
문화중에 하나인 인터넷의 발달은 빠른 정보의 교환으로 누구나 간편하게 유익한 정보를 얻을 수 있는 단말기 세상을 이루게 되었다. 그러나 이에
따르는 문제 또한 심각성이 크다.
김봉중 작가의 새로운 작품 씨리즈 '중독'은 현대 문명의 발달에 따르는 생활에 무의식 적으로
젖어드는 중독 아닌 중독에 대한 심각성을 다룬 작품으로 인터넷이나 전자 기기등에 익숙해져 그것이 또하나의 새로운 생활패턴으로 형성 됨으로
그것들을 소유 하는것으로 착각하지만 사실상 기기들의 소유물이 되어버린 사람들이 느끼지 못하는 심각성 혹은 위험성 이라고 까지 감히 언급할수 있는
부분을 적나라하게 지적 하고 있다.
김봉중 작가는 이번작품에서 화려하게 채색된 아름다운 자태의 양귀비 꽃과 그 꽃 수술 부분에는
물감으로 채색된 전자 부품과 전선줄등 이렇게 상반되고 어울리지 않는 재료들을 절묘하게 혼합시켜 또하나의 새로운 21세기형 중독, 인터넷 양귀비를
만들어 낸다. 그속에 빠져 있으면서도 중독됨을 느끼지 못하거나 그데로 환각에 빠져 방관하게 되는 우리들의 인터넷 일상이 바로 중독 그 자체
인것이다
서울대학교 미술 대학을 졸업한 김봉중 작가는 90년대에 미국으로 건너와 뉴욕을 중심으로 꾸준하게 작업활동을 해온 작가이다.
다수의 개인전과 그룹전에서 그의 다양하지만 주관성에는 흔들림이 없는 작품들을 만나왔으며 이번이 첼시에서 여는 첫
개인전이다.
