<h4>"Between": Works by Korean Contemporary Artist Kim Ji Min</h4><table width="668" align="left" class="left" id="community_image"><tbody><tr><td><img width="668" align="absmiddle" src="/rankup_module/rankup_board/attach/performance/14379432273465.jpg"></td></tr></tbody></table> <div align="justify" style="text-align: justify;">The Korean Cultural Center Washington, D.C. proudly presents “Between”, a solo exhibition of cutting-edge Korean contemporary artist Kim Ji Min that creatively explores the psychology of life in our consumer-driven society, on view June 26 – July 20.</div><div align="justify" style="text-align: justify;"> </div><div align="justify" style="text-align: justify;">Combining elements of visual, installation, video, and found art, Kim’s work explores the contradictions inherent in our modern consumer society by repurposing mass quantities of common product labels into striking composite images of nature – an exquisite juxtaposition of industrialized material and organic form. The title “Between” refers to the indeterminate space between our highly labeled social reality and our idealized structure of life. </div><div align="justify" style="text-align: justify;"> </div><div align="justify" style="text-align: justify;">“It is easy to ignore labels, yet they have great significance as direct indicators of a product’s value,” says Kim. His work caught the attention of the greater art world for revealing the psychology of life in a consumer society, using strong visual imagery and unique materials. This exhibition also includes the debut if his latest work, Wired DREAM, in which intertwined curves of layered labels form mountain peaks that evoke traditional Korean visual art and an implicit sense of the “between.” Kim says he focuses on the transparency of the labels, both physically and metaphorically, transforming them into a kind of paint with a unique color palette depending on the viewing angle. The Whale and Wired DREAM allow viewers to experience both a sense of visual lightness and the hidden meaning behind the material. </div><div align="justify" style="text-align: justify;"> </div><div align="justify" style="text-align: justify;">Kim Ji Min is a graduate of Seoul National University’s Department of Sculpture, as well as the Wimbledon College of Art. He has been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions, including in Japan, New Zealand, Singapore, Hungary, and Korea. He is the recipient of the Ghasong Art Award, Fukuoka Asian Art Museum Residency (2010), Christchurch Art Centre Residency (2009), and the Changdong Artist Residency (2008), among other recognitions.
