What is true beauty?

The artist Seo Ryung Lim answers the question through her project ‘An Ageless Beauty.’ Seo Ryung Lim, who received three degrees in art from the school Ewha Women’s University, establishes an elegant characteristics and details of paintings through the use of stone powders and pigment on silk. Lim’s vibrant yet simple colors and lines connect the sentiments of both oriental and western aesthetic environments. Furthermore, her expression of traditionalism and modernism creates a tranquil yet deep form of painting.

In Lim’s paintings, the subject of “beauty” is clearly blended into the art. Flowers, butterflies, birds, vases, tea cups, and women - which compose pervasive yet acute emotions - create a fantasy-like milieu. Most of the women in her paintings are not decorated or embellished, however, the expression and the postures of women reach out toward the people with a true symbol of beauty and nature. Growing up in a traditional Korean house and culture, Lim leaves myriads of blank spaces into her paintings. Those abundant spaces let people to see and hear the story of one woman’s life. Indeed, her simple yet beautiful paintings open up our lyrical feelings and they reborn as beautiful poetries.

진정한 아름다움이란 무엇일까?
임서령 작가는 이번 전시 ‘나이를 초월한 아름다움 (An Ageless Beauty)’을 통해 사람들에게 진정한 미(美)를 보여주고 있다. 이화여대에서 3개의 미술 학위를 받고 졸업한 임서령 작가는 그녀의 작품들을 stone powder과 pigment를 실크위에 페인트하는 방법으로 섬세함을 살려내었다. 임서령 작가는 아름답고 심플한 색과 선을 사용하여 동양적이지만 동시에 서양적인 감정을 아주 깊게 연결하고 있다. 또한 그녀는 전통적인 느낌과 모던함의 느낌을 동시에 표현함으로서 조용하면서도 심도있는 아름다운 그림들로 창조하였다.

그녀의 작품 속에는 “아름다움”을 상징하는 것들이 그림과 함께 존재한다. 작품 속 꽃, 나비, 새, 꽃병, 차잔, 그리고 여자들은 넓으나 매우 깊은 여백과 함께 그윽하고 몽환적인 분위기를 나타내고 있다. 대부분의 여자들은 화려하게 꾸미거나 치장하지 않았으나 표정과 포즈를 통해 사람들에게 진정한 아름다움을 전달하고 있다. 한옥에서 자란 임서령 작가는 그녀의 작품속에 여백을 많이 두었다, 그리고 그러한 여백이 보는 사람들로 하여금 한 여인의 삶에 대한 이야기를 들을 수 있는 듯 하다. 임서령 작가만의 심플하나 아름다운 작품들은 우리들의 감성적인 상상을 길을 열어주어 다시한번 한편의 아름다운 시로 태어난다.
